Abstract

Purpose:  1) Analyzing the effect of performance appraisal and transactional leadership on member commitment at Adisutjipto Air Force Base, Yogyakarta; 2) Analyzing the effect of performance appraisal and transactional leadership on the innovative behavior of members at Adisutjipto Air Force Base, Yogyakarta; 3) Analyzing the influence of commitment to the innovative behavior of members at Adisutjipto Air Force Base, Yogyakarta; and 4) Analyzing the effect of performance appraisal and transactional leadership on innovative behavior through member commitment at Adisutjipto Air Force Base, Yogyakarta.

Design/methodology/approach:  This research is an explanatory research using a questionnaire in collecting data.  Therefore, to analyze the data in this study, descriptive analysis techniques are used to describe the research variables and SEM analysis techniques using program packages.

Findings:  Performance appraisal and transactional leadership have an effect on commitment, performance appraisal has a higher influence rather than transactional leadership; Performance appraisal has an effect on innovative behavior, but transactional leadership has no effect on innovative behavior, performance appraisal can create innovative behavior; Performance appraisal and transactional leadership have an effect on innovative behavior through commitment, performance appraisal and transactional leadership can optimize innovative behavior when supported by the commitment factor of members of the Indonesian Air Force at Adisutjipto air base, Yogyakarta

Research, Practical & Social implications: this research can be used as a source of practical information and policies to improve the quality of innovative behavior of members from the aspects of performance appraisal and transactional leadership through member commitment.

Originality/value: The originality of this research includes several studies that were built to find new existing theoretical models related to the effect of performance appraisal and transactional leadership on innovative behavior through commitment.
