Abstract

This study focused on the different approaches and competencies of students in Filipino. The study specifically focused on differentiated instruction and explicit teaching. The analysis was based on three competencies: knowledge, understanding, and application. The main objective of this study was to examine the significance of the teaching approaches and student competencies. The study aimed to answer the following questions: First, the level of student performance in the pretest and post-tests in the controlled and experimental groups. Second, the level of Student Competence in Filipino in the pretest and post-tests in the practical and controlled groups. Third, the significant difference in the final test scores of the students. Fourth, significant difference in the final test scores of Student Competence in Filipino. And fifth, significant difference in the mean gain score of the students in the experimental and controlled groups. The study utilized a valid test to determine the student’s level of learning and competence. An experimental design with three groups and pretest and post-tests was used. Two classes from Grade 9 were randomly assigned to Differentiated Instruction (Controlled Group) and Explicit Teaching (Experimental Group). The researcher used the arithmetic mean and Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) to measure the experimental research. Based on the results, the two groups showed similar learning outcomes in Filipino, but the experimental group showed more favorable results. There was a significant difference in the final scores between the two groups. There was no significant difference in knowledge but a significant difference in understanding and application between the two groups regarding the student’s final scores. Overall, there was a significant difference in the mean gain scores in the study. It can be concluded that using innovative approaches, especially expressed teaching, yielded meaningful results.
