This article deals with the study of representations of the self and the other through the theme of work developed in the textual and iconographic discourse of twelve school textbooks. First, I define the role of the textbook in the construction of the young schoolboy and the image he has of himself and of the other. Secondly, I propose an analysis of some textual and iconographic examples, divided into three economic sectors: primary, secondary and tertiary, in order to highlight the nature of the economic activities privileged by each textbook, the characters who carry them out and the age group that is concerned. Finally, I discuss the data and findings from a synchronic and diachronic point of view to see if we are dealing with evolving or fixed representations. The results obtained show us that there is a significant predominance of the tertiary sector, which explains the failure of the integration of schoolchildren into the labor market later on.
