Abstract

English language proficiency plays a crucial role in the academic performance of Japanese students. In an increasingly interconnected world, English has become a global lingua franca, and its importance extends beyond language learning. This study examines the correlation between English language proficiency and the academic achievements of Japanese students. A mixed-methods approach is used to investigate this relationship. Quantitative analysis involves evaluating standardized test scores and academic performance across various subjects, while qualitative data is gathered through surveys and interviews with students, teachers, and educational experts. Preliminary findings suggest a positive connection between English language proficiency and academic success. Students with higher English proficiency tend to excel in subjects such as science and mathematics, frequently taught in English. Moreover, those with advanced English skills actively engage in extracurricular activities, including international exchange programs, enriching their educational experiences. However, the study also highlights challenges Japanese students encounter while striving for English language proficiency, such as issues related to curriculum design, teacher quality, and student motivation. These challenges provide valuable insights for educational reforms and curriculum enhancements, with the goal of better preparing Japanese students to thrive in an increasingly globalized world. This research sheds light on the interplay between language proficiency and academic performance in the Japanese educational context, offering guidance to policymakers, administrators, and educators for informed decision-making regarding curriculum development and language education strategies. It aims to empower Japanese students to become more competitive in the global arena.
