Geographic information systems are found as one of the technologies that allow the application of advanced techniques to order the territories and search for sustainable alternatives, the information that is handled with them can be incorporated into information geoportals, helping students, teachers and researchers or know the integral characteristics of the territories. The objective is to show the cooperation that exists in a joint research project between the Technical University of Manabí and the State University of Milagros, united to develop a Geoportal for academic and research purposes. The Universities have a social role to prepare the new generations with a comprehensive approach to the territory and prepare their students with a sustainable vision from the local level. For the development of the research, a formative-methodological approach was proposed aimed at guaranteeing that the teachers linked to the project acquire knowledge, which allows them to carry out an integral analysis observing the natural resources, the environment as an autochthonous potential that must be used to meet the needs of society from a vision of sustainability. As a result, a cooperative research project was obtained between both universities where information is exchanged and where each of them will develop their version according to their intrinsic needs of the territory, care for the environment and interaction with society to achieve linking and research processes that strengthen the teaching work of each of the institutions.
