Learning Poverty among the Secondary Level Learners: A Grave Crisis in India

The present study empirically explored the Learning Deficit of secondary school learners in English. The chief objective of the study was to find out the Minimum Level of Learning (MLL) and overall achievement in English. The investigators developed a Minimum Level of Learning Assessment Tool (MLLAT) and administered on a sample of 100 grade-IX secondary school students who were randomly selected from 5 schools of Jorhat district, Assam. Academic scores obtained in half yearly examination conducted by the schools were collected to get the overall learning outcome in English. The findings of the study revealed that 31.12% students fall under below MLL and the formulated hypothesis is declared as there exists a significant difference in the overall learning outcomes and MLL. Likewise, there is a significant difference in the overall learning outcomes and MLL with respect to gender. In this context the investigators would highlight about the Learning Deficit of grade-IX learners in the subject English of Jorhat district.
