Abstract

This study aims to examine the practices and challenges of instructional leadership in secondary schools in Lucknow. The descriptive research method is used. The sample consists of 80 teachers, 16 department heads, four principals, four vice principals, and eight parent-teacher association members. Purposive, simple random sampling, systematic and comprehensive sampling techniques are used to select the sample respondents. The source of data collection was both primary and secondary sources. Closed-ended and open-ended questionnaires and interviews were used to collect the data. The data collected through closed-ended questionnaires are analysed using frequency, percentage, mean scores, standard deviation, and t-tests. The data collected through open-ended interviews are analysed qualitatively. This study indicated that most instructional leaders perform their instructional leadership roles poorly. The major constraints to instructional leaders in providing effective and efficient instructional leadership functions are inadequate resources, enough qualified principals in educational leadership and the related area, law parent and community involvement, students' disciplinary problems, and other necessary facilities.
